Solar Installations at YDL

YDL-Michigan

In May 2015, 18 solar panels were installed at YDL-Michigan. An anonymous donor gifted these panels to six Ypsilanti nonprofits. Solar Ypsi coordinated the project, and the panels were installed by S.U.R. Energy. The rated output of the 18 solar panels is 4500 W, enough to power an average home.

Since YDL-Michigan is a historic building, YDL and Solar Ypsi worked with the city to place the panels where they would not interfere with the historic facade. The blending of historic preservation and modern technology is just one of the things that makes our downtown library unique!

YDL-Superior:

In August 2022, 106 solar panels were installed on the roof of the Superior branch. The project was funded by an anonymous donor and many Ypsilanti District Library supporters. Solar Ypsi was the coordinator of this project with installation by Nova Consultants, Inc. The rated output of the panels is 42,930 watts, about ten times more energy than the Michigan branch produces.

Track the solar output in real time, and view photos of the installation process below.
