It is with great pleasure that Ypsilanti District Library announces their livestream event Galvanizing Social Justice Through Comics. Co-Authors of the riveting graphic novel, Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell will give a keynote talk about the process about writing and illustrating the 2016 National Book Award recipient. The event takes place at Washtenaw Community College, Towsley Auditorium g on Thursday, September 21st from 5-6:30 pm.

John Lewis was born in Troy, Alabama in 1940, the son of sharecroppers and one of ten children living under one roof. Through a series of serendipitous connections, harsh realities, and his faith, Lewis would turn his years of education into action during the Civil Rights Movement, becoming the youngest member of the Big Six civil rights leaders which included his mentor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He served as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963 to 1966 and fought for voter rights for African American's in Selma.

MARCH has become an indispensable resource for teachers, students, and young activists in and out of the classroom. Of the 425 copies of the MARCH trilogy available for borrowing in Washtenaw County, 300 of them are housed in the Ypsilanti District Library. Please join us for this momentous occasion.
