Where'd You Go, Bernadette: a Novel

Eighth grader Bee lives in Seattle with her mother Bernadette, an award-winning architect who gave up her career years before and who is now mostly a recluse in their derelict home, and her father Elgin, a Microsoft genius. On the eve of the family’s planned trip to Antarctica, which is Bee’s reward for good grades and her destination choice, Bernadette disappears. Bee pieces together clues about her mother’s whereabouts through emails, articles, FBI files, and even correspondence with a psychiatrist, and through these we learn the family’s story, including Bernadette’s feud with the other parents at Bee’s private school, her reliance on a personal assistant in India to do even the most mundane tasks, and why she gave up architecture. Semple shares the family’s story piece by piece, until we arrive at the moment when Bernadette disappears. Semple is wildly creative in telling this wickedly funny story--there are too many laugh-out-loud moments to count. Kathleen Wilhoite is the perfect narrator to tell this tale, especially her interpretation of smart, fast-talking Bee.
