The Trouble with Reality : A Rumination on Moral Panic in Our Time

Brooke Gladstone asserts that the Trump team in the White House has mastered the art of the lie. “For them, as she writes, lying is the point. The more blatant the lie, the easier it is to hijack reality and assert power over the truth.” Succinct and spirited, qualities we have come to expect from Gladstone as host of the NPR radio program, “On the Media”, her powerful “rumination” helps the reader sort what exactly is going on in our country and why we are so disjointed in what has come to be known as the “post-truth fake news era”. Included is cognitive linguist George Lakoff’s analysis of Donald Trump’s tweets, asserting there are several categories: Preemptive Framing, The Diversion Tweet, The Trial Balloon, and The Deflection Tweet; Lakoff suggests that we not retweet his messages, as it only lends them strength. Disconcerting and sobering, Gladstone’s essay may be the eye-opener we need.
