TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten

Parents are their child’s first and best teachers. Research shows that talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing every day with your child prepares them for success in school and in life!

With TALK, parents will receive 2-3 text messages per week with ideas for fun, easy, age-appropriate activities to try at home. The activities don’t require any special materials and are quick to complete, but the benefits last a lifetime!

Parents will also learn about free events and resources for families with young children in their area.

3 EASY WAYS TO SIGN UP!

  • Text TALK to 77453 and enter information by text message as prompted.
  • Visit www.texttolearn.com and fill out the online form.
  • Fill out a paper form and return it to your local library.

Who can participate?

Parents in Washtenaw County with children under 5 can sign up to receive TALK messages. They will be asked to provide their zip code and child’s birthdate when they sign up so messages they receive are tailored especially for their child. Two birthdates can be entered so a parent with a baby and a preschooler can receive age appropriate activity suggestions for each.

When will the service be available?

TALK will launch October 14, 2017 with Play Dates throughout Washtenaw County, where families can try out some of the activities they will receive in text messages. The program is currently funded until 2020.

TALK Kickoff: Play Dates

Saturday, October 14, 10:30am-noon

Join your local library for a play date! You can sign up for the TALK text messaging service and stay for fun, interactive play. It’s a great way to meet other parents and find out what your local library and other community organizations have to offer for little ones.

The Ypsilanti District Library is coordinating the program, in partnership with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, the Washtenaw Intermediate School District, Success by Six, Washtenaw Literacy, the Children’s Literacy Network, and the libraries of Dexter, Milan, Northfield Township, and Saline. This project is funded (in part) with a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan.

Can my organization get involved?

Preschools, daycares, pediatricians, social service agencies, and other organizations can help spread the word! We would love to talk to you and your staff about the benefits TALK offers to your clients. Please contact Jodi Krahnke at jkrahnke@ypsilibrary.org or 734-482-4110 x1322.
