Seveneves : [sound recording] a novelBy Stephenson, Neal

This terrific science fiction novel is more like two books in one. In the first section, the main setting is the International Space Station. Scientists there, and around the world, are scrambling to preserve humanity after a catastrophic event threatens the destruction of Earth. The second part of the book jumps 5,000 years into the future, as the human race, living in a huge, complex environment in outer space, begins the return to Earth. The first section is much longer, with many wonderful characters to root for. Part 2 is also fascinating, with fallout from decisions made five centuries earlier clearly evident. Stephenson manages to make complex scientific concepts understandable, his characters and their relationships are very well done, and he addresses social, political, and scientific issues, all while telling a really good story. Mary Robinette Kowal and Will Damron narrate.
