Miranda and Caliban

Fantasy author Carey has written a lushly imagined prequel to the events in Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest.  The novel covers 12 or so years before the events in the play, detailing the growing-up years of Miranda, under the care of her magician father, Prospero. The two of them were exiled to an island when Miranda was very young, and her father has been plotting his elaborate revenge ever since.  The only other inhabitant of the island is the creature named Caliban, who was abandoned there by his mother, a witch. The story is narrated by Miranda and Caliban in alternating chapters. Prospero captures Caliban and binds him with a spell, intent on using him as a key aspect of his plot.  Father and daughter set out to “civilize” Caliban, and as his main teacher, Miranda develops an affection for her student. The consequences almost ruin Prospero’s plot. A fantastic one-sitting read.

"Miranda and Caliban is bestselling fantasy author Jacqueline Carey’s gorgeous retelling of The Tempest. With hypnotic prose and a wild imagination, Carey explores the themes of twisted love and unchecked power that lie at the heart of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, while serving up a fresh take on the play's iconic characters."
