Himself

Completely in her element, Irish author Jess Kidd's first novel is an adventure, a crime novel, a murder mystery, and whimsical character study of an entire village of eccentric, single-minded and stubborn small town villagers in rural 1970's Ireland. Mahoney comes home on a tip that the disappearance of his mother 26 years ago was of a suspicious nature.  Despite his charming personality and good looks, he is met with hostility and distrust, as his mother was not well-regarded in the village.  Mahoney has the unique gift of being able to see and communicate with the dead, who play prominently in  his quest, as do a host of young women he attracts. Full of traditionally wild Irish characters either try to assist or thwart Mahoney's efforts, providing the lilt of a comedy. There are certainly some corrupt and sketchy individuals living in the village, all of whom harbor well-kept secrets, whose unravelling keeps the reader turning pages at a furious rate.  A well-told story with a traditional Irish country flair.
