Girl Waits with Gun

Set in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1914, this lively novel pits Constance Kopp and her sisters, Norma and Fleurette, against local silk factory owner Henry Kaufman and his thug friends, following a collision between the Kopps’ buggy and Kaufman’s car. Constance wants to be reimbursed for the damage to their buggy, since Kaufman was clearly at fault. But Kaufman refuses to pay, and begins instead to threaten the Kopp sisters, especially teenager Fleurette, with bricks thrown through their farmhouse windows and, eventually, gunfire. Not to be cowed, Constance enlists the help of the local sheriff, who sees this as an opportunity to get a known group of troublemakers off the street. One can’t help but root for the dogged Constance who, as the title suggests, learns to shoot a gun and isn’t afraid to use it. A missing baby, a family secret, and appealing and interesting characters, including cantankerous Norma and excitable Fleurette, add to this highly entertaining audiobook. Christina Moore’s narration is spot on. The ending hints at further adventures for the Kopp sisters down the road, which would be most welcome.
