Gabi: A Girl In Pieces

Gabi thinks of herself as many things, a fat girl, a gordita (a cute chubby girl), a Mexican American who looks white, the child of immigrants, a writer, and the child of an addict. During her tumultuous last year of high school Gabi struggles to support her friends and family through tough times while also pursuing her own dreams. Throughout these struggles Gabi finds an outlet in poetry and dreams of going to Berkley to and becoming a writer. Can Gabi get the grades and convince her mother to let out of her sight?

Gabi: A Girl In Pieces is fun and heartfelt. Sprinkled throughout the book are poems Gabi writes to her father, her boyfriend, her mother, and herself. These poems draw you into the life of a budding writer struggling with, and over coming, her own circumstances. While she goes through many tragic events, they do not break her. Instead she views them as simply part of her life and a part of our world.
