Democracy in Chains : The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America

Democracy in Chains is an important book which I hope many people will take the time to read.  It answers lots of questions and clarifies how American democracy has dissolved into its present dysfunctional, baffling state:  a grand plan, behind the scenes, under our noses, undertaken with insidious design by determined individuals, who have succeeded in co-opting the Republican Party to do their bidding.  The brains behind all this was James McGill Buchanan (1919-2013), a southern economist who went on to win a Nobel Prize for his "public choice theory", which was embraced by libertarians, spawning such organizations as the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation and the collaboration of millionaire Charles Koch. Its underlying purpose is to protect the rich and powerful from majority rule (the rest of us). Nancy MacLean's impeccable research exposes the plans of the elite to destroy most government programs, what libertarians call "government overreach," including public education, labor laws, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, voting rights, the EPA....the list goes on and on.  Eye-opening and alarming, to say the least.

“This sixty-year campaign to make libertarianism mainstream and eventually take the government itself is at the heart of Democracy in Chains. . . . If you're worried about what all this means for America's future, you should be” – NPR
