Borne is the name of an amorphous, shape-shifting, sentient clump of matter that main character Rachel plucks off the giant bear-like life form called Mord as she is scavenging for useable scrap. At first she thinks it is a plant, but soon discovers that it can learn and display an amazing array of shapes, and it is growing larger;  she protects it from imminent deconstruction by her partner, Wick, and lovingly gives it the name, Borne. Rachel and Wick barely survive in a polluted, devastated future world, one where a nefarious biotech institution called The Company had been experimenting with creating new life-forms which could exist in the harsh environment, discarding their failures as deformed creatures (Mord and Borne are both Company rejects). If things couldn’t get much weirder, there is also a former Company employee known only as The Magician, who controls a patrol of murderous feral half-children; they and creatures called Mord proxies are trying to discover where Rachel and Wick are hiding.  This stuff is great!  Expert world-building and a fantastic imagination will keep you on the edge of your seat.  Enjoy this book!
