19th Wife

Fundamentalist Mormon breakaway polygamous sects have been in the news recently, and this intriguing book threads two stories together: one, of Brigham Young’s rebellious 19th wife in the 1870’s, and the other a 19th wife in present-day southern Utah, accused of murdering her husband.

Oscar nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Whit Stillman’s account of a young middle-class man’s foray into New York City’s debutante society sparkles with highbrow wit while capturing the sublime clumsiness and naiveté of youth. A romantic misadventure; his characters are trying their bodies and intellects on for size.

Dope Sick

This fantastically written novel could be considered “young  adult” due to the protagonist’s age and circumstances, but it could appeal to anyone older as well. The story follows character Lil J from his first-person point of view. He is running from the NYPD after a police officer is shot by one of his accomplices after a drug deal gone wrong. Lil J ends up hiding out in an abandoned building in a ghetto where he meets a mysterious character named Kelly.

This is a fantastic, all-in-one book about backyard or more extensive homesteading. If you are a gardener or are interested in raising chickens, bees, worms, and other farm animals, then this is a great book for you. Sections include: growing your own food, canning, keeping chickens, bees, etc., generating your own energy, simple structures on your land, and much more. The color photographs and illustrations are inspiring. This is a thoroughly researched text and it is easy to read. A lot of care and thought went into this book.

You've Got to Read This Book

What does it take for a book to be life-changing? I love the idea of the perfect book hitting someone at just the right time. This book gives us that life-changing title for well-known figures including Wyland, Lou Holtz, and Nancy Pearl. It's thought-provoking and uplifting to read these anecdotes. Is there a book that changed your life? Please leave a comment below.

This book encourages the reader to give new life to old objects - turn an old t-shirt into a shaggy rug, bottle-caps into necklace charms, and alter your clothing beyond recognition. The instructions are clear and include illustrations. You'll find many of the required materials for these projects around your home, and you'll be just a short time away from fun and funky crafts!

Crazy Heart: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

This motion picture soundtrack features many well-known classic and contemporary country artists and songwriters such as, Buck Owens, Lucinda Williams, and Townes Van Zandt. Songwriters and performers Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett wrote the theme song, "The Weary Kind." "The Weary Kind" earned an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Song." About one-third of the 23 songs are performed by well-known Hollywood actors such as, Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, and Colin Farrell.

Van Lear Rose

Musician Loretta Lynn won Grammy Awards for "Best Country Album" and "Best Country Collaboration with Vocals" in 2005 for album "Van Lear Rose." Jack White, of the Detroit rock band, The White Stripes, produced the album and also sang with Lynn on the album's song "Portland, Oregon" (which won the vocal collaboration Grammy). Overall, the album is a gorgeous musical portrait of Lynn's life story.

Oracular Spectacular

This album, Oracular Spectacular, is undeniably catchy. MGMT are two guys based out of Brooklyn, New York. Their sound: synthesizer-pop, dance, and rock with uninhibited and sometimes weird-in-a-good-way vocals.

Hot, Flat, and Crowded

Columnist Thomas Friedman looks into the future to talk about the factors that will control our future from climate change (HOT), new technologies (FLAT), and population growth (CROWDED).

The Big Year: A tale of man, nature, and fowl obsession

This book won me over with its quirky characters, real-life bird information, and its ability to turn get me interested in a subject I had never considered before. The Big Year follows three competitive birders in their race to see the most bird species in North America in 1998. It's a nonfiction book that reads more like a novel. Fiction readers and non-fiction fans alike will love it!
